JM. Gobillard Brut Gran Reserva Premier Cru & JM.

JM. Gobillard Brut Grand Reserve Premier Cru & JM. Gobillard Brut Blanc de Noirs: Two great options for a bubbly summer

The history of Maison de Champagne JM. Gobillard begins in 1933, when Gervais Gobillard decided to buy two hectares of vineyard in Hautvillers to produce his own champagne, aiming to carve out a space in a market dominated by the big producers. His son, Jean-Marie, followed in his footsteps, eventually owning eight hectares of vineyard by 1982. Today, the third generation is at the helm of the maison, which owns 30 hectares of vineyards and controls another 125 hectares under long-term contracts. Today, we are going to talk about two of the house’s offerings: a brut grand reserve and a blanc de noirs.

JM. Gobillard Brut Grand Reserve Premier Cru is a blend of Chardonnay (50%), Pinot Noir (25%), and Meunier (25%), sourced from Premier Cru vineyards in Hautvillers, Cumières, and Dizy. In this blend, 30% of the wines used are reserve wines, and the champagne undergoes at least three years of aging on lees.

JM. Gobillard Brut Blanc de Noirs is a varietal of Pinot Noir (90%) with a slight contribution of Meunier (10%). It is a champagne with a lemon-yellow color and golden reflections. Its nose is deep and mineral, with aromas of white fruit and notes of red berries. On the palate, it is a wine with good acidity and a very fine, persistent bubble in a balanced, complex, mineral, and long sip, with a slightly bitter finish.

On the other hand, JM. Gobillard Brut Grand Reserve Premier Cru has a golden color with metallic reflections. In its nose, similar to the Blanc de Noirs, we also find white fruit and mineral notes, but in this case accompanied by slight bakery notes. On the palate, it again has good acidity and that fine, consistent bubble we love, in a fruity, elegant, deep, and long sip.

With this serious yet approachable profile, in these two bottles of JM. Gobillard, we find a good ally to endure the warm summer nights and to toast with the fruit of a winery that in 1933 decided to buy two hectares of vineyard to compete with the great maisons of Champagne and today is a reference in this region.
