Rapolao probablemente sea el paraje más conocido del Bierzo, y nosotros tuvimos la suerte de visitarlo de la mano de César Márquez en el verano de 2019. Lo que más nos sorprendió fue el tamaño de esa ladera orientada al oeste, a los pies del Castro Ventosa. Esperábamos un viñedo mucho mayor. Según descendíamos, César nos explicaba quién hacía vino con cada pedazo: “De ahí sale el de la Vizcaína, y de aquí el de Castro (Castroventosa); ese trozo de más allá es el de Magaña (Diego), y este el de los Michelini. De aquí salen las dos barricas que hago yo, y luego esa parcela es de Peique, y esa otra es la de Polo (Vinos Valtuille), que todavía no han sacado sus Rapolaos al mercado, pero pronto lo harán”.
Nosotros intentábamos encontrar esas lindes que César tenía tan claras en medio de ese mar de cepas viejas mientras hacíamos la cuenta de todos los Rapolao que nos quedaban por probar. Más tarde, ya en la bodega, catamos el Rapolao 2017 y una muestra del 2018, ya listo para ser embotellado. Pero hoy vamos a hablar del 2019, de ese Rapolao cuyas uvas vimos en la viña pocos días antes de empezar la vendimia.
César Márquez El Rapolao Vino de Paraje 2019 es un varietal de Mencía (85 %) acompañado de Garnacha Tintorera (10 %) y otras variedades que se encuentran en la parcela de 0,2 hectáreas, situada a 540 metros de altitud y con suelos arcillosos. Las uvas fermentan (el 75 % de ellas con raspón) con levaduras autóctonas en barricas abiertas de roble francés. El vino tiene una crianza de unos 12 meses en esas mismas barricas.
Nos encontramos ante un vino de un color cereza traslúcido. En nariz es muy limpio y frutal; fruta roja fresca, alguna nota de campo y quizá una ligera nota ahumada. En boca es fino, directo, fresco, elegante y complejo, con el toque goloso de los taninos dulces. Es la interpretación de un paisaje, la interpretación de César de, probablemente, el paraje más famoso del Bierzo.

Rapolao is probably the best-known vineyard area in Bierzo, and we were lucky enough to visit it with César Márquez in the summer of 2019. What surprised us the most was the size of this west-facing slope, at the foot of Castro Ventosa. We expected a much larger vineyard. As we descended, César explained to us who made wine with each piece: “The grapes for La Vizcaína comes from there, and the ones for Castro (Castroventosa) are from here; that piece beyond is the one used by Magaña (Diego), and this is Michelini’s. The two barrels that I make come from here, and then that plot is Peique’s, and that other is Polo’s (Vinos Valtuille). They haven’t put their Rapolaos into the market yet, but they’ll do it soon”.
We tried to find those boundaries that César had so clear in the middle of that sea of old vines while we made the count of all the Rapolao that we had left to taste. Later, in the winery, we tasted the Rapolao 2017 and a sample from 2018, ready to be bottled. But today we are going to talk about 2019, about that Rapolao whose grapes we saw in the vineyard a few days before starting the harvest.
César Márquez El Rapolao Vino de Paraje 2019 is a Mencía (85%) varietal accompanied by Alicante Bouschet (10%) and other varieties found on the 0.2-hectare plot, located at 540 meters altitude on clay soils. The grapes are fermented (75% of them with the whole cluster) with indigenous yeasts in open French oak barrels. The wine is aged for about 12 months in those same barrels.
We are facing a wine of a translucent cherry color. On the nose it’s very clean and fruity; fresh red fruit, some country notes and perhaps a light smoky note. On the palate it’s fine, direct, fresh, elegant and complex, with the gourmand touch of sweet tannins. It’s the interpretation of a landscape, César’s interpretation of, probably, the most famous vineyard area in Bierzo.
