Una de las cuatro variedades de uva blanca con la que se puede elaborar vino en el Bierzo es la Doña Blanca, más conocida entre los viticultores de la zona como Valenciana. Esta uva suele formar parte de los vinos blancos de la Denominación de origen, pero siempre en un pequeño porcentaje del coupage, a veces ni siquiera declarado, condicionado por la escasez de cepas que suelen encontrarse salpicadas entre otras variedades en los viñedos viejos de la zona.
Quizá por ello, no habíamos encontrado un monovarietal de esta uva hasta que conocimos a Silvia Marrao y su maravilloso proyecto Banzao, una bodega “de montaña” en la localidad de San Pedro de Olleros, en un lugar que parece separado del mundo. Allí, y más concretamente en el paraje de La Cruz, Silvia cuida de un pequeño y atípico viñedo donde se cultivan las cepas viejas de Valenciana que protagoniza nuestra historia de hoy.
Banzao La Cruz 2020 es un monovarietal de Doña Blanca procedente de un viñedo de 0,25 hectáreas plantado en las décadas de los años 40 y 50 del siglo XX, cepas que crecen sobre suelos de pizarra con arcilla y cantos rodados, a 739 metros de altitud, conducidas en vaso y, desde 2017, aún en fase de recuperación.
Tras una vendimia manual, en cajas, la mitad de los racimos se despalilla (sin estrujar las uvas) y se mete en la prensa vertical junto con la otra mitad, sin despalillar, donde la uva hará una maceración pre-fermentativa con hielo seco. Después del encubado del mosto y una nueva maceración con hielo seco, la fermentación tiene lugar en depósitos de acero inoxidable, con levaduras autóctonas, y el vino realiza una crianza de cuatro meses sobre sus lías finas y de al menos otros ocho meses en botella.
La Cruz es un vino realmente especial, con una nariz muy expresiva, floral, silvestre, intensa pero a la vez liviana. Su boca es elegante, mineral y fresca, larga y con buena intensidad. Es un vino único que te transporta a un viñedo único, a la montaña, a esa reserva de la biosfera donde la Doña Blanca (o la Valenciana) reivindica su lugar entre los vinos blancos de la D. O. Bierzo.

One of the four white varieties with which yon can make wine in Bierzo is Doña Blanca, better known among winegrowers in the area as Valenciana. This grape is usually part of the white wines of the Designation of Origin, but always in a small percentage of the blend, sometimes not even declared, conditioned by the scarcity of vines that are usually found sprinkled among other varieties in the old vineyards of the area.
Perhaps for this reason, we hadn’t found a single-varietal of this grape until we met Silvia Marrao and her wonderful Banzao project, a “mountain” winery in the village of San Pedro de Olleros, in a place that seems separated from the world. There, and more specifically in the place of La Cruz, Silvia takes care of a small and atypical vineyard where the old Valenciana vines that are the protagonist of our today story are grown.
Banzao La Cruz 2020 is a Doña Blanca single-varietal from a 0.25-hectare vineyard planted in the 40s and 50s of the 20th century, vines that grow on slate soils with clay and pebbles, at 739 meters above sea level, driven in goblet and, since 2017, still in the recovery phase.
After a manual harvest, in boxes, half of the bunches are destemmed (without crushing the grapes) and put into the vertical press together with the other half, without destemming, where the grapes will go through a pre-fermentative maceration with dry ice. After vatting the must and a new maceration with dry ice, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, with indigenous yeasts, and the wine is aged for four months on its fine lees and for at least another eight months in the bottle.
La Cruz is a really special wine, with a very expressive, floral, wild, intense but at the same time light nose. Its palate is elegant, mineral and fresh, with good intensity and a long sip. It’s a unique wine that transports you to a unique vineyard, to the mountains, to that biosphere reserve where Doña Blanca (or Valenciana) claims its place among the white wines of the D. O. Bierzo.
