La Lune 2020: A great biodynamic Chenin Blanc from Mark Angeli

Mark Angeli used to work in construction, but one day he decides to turn his life around and trains as a winegrower at Château La Tour Blanche, in Sauternes, France. And in 1989 he acquired the Ferme de la Sansonnière, a winery located on the Loire whose history dates back to the fifteenth century. There he grows his vines and makes his wines following the precepts of biodynamics since his first harvest, in 1990. Mark Angeli takes biodynamics further than most winegrowers. On his farm there are eight hectares of vineyards, a herd of Breton cows that are in charge of fertilizing the property, two hectares of wheat and an orchard. All energy comes from solar panels or a boiler fueled with wood from their own sustainable forest. His tractor is modified to work with sunflower oil also obtained from his own cultivation, and even the car he drives runs on compressed air. And, as expected, his work in the cellar is minimal intervention.

La Lune 2020 is a Chenin Blanc single-varietal from vineyards with an average age of 35 years. After a manual harvest, the must ferments in 500-litre barrels where the wine will also be aged for approximately one year.

This is a wine of a straw yellow color with metallic reflections. Its nose is fruity and floral. On the palate we find good acidity and a very balanced medium sip, unctuous but not greasy, with a slight bitter touch and a spicy note in the aftertaste.

It’s a clean, pleasant and very interesting wine, endowed with a clear personality resulting from the work of Mark Angeli, a winemaker committed to his terroir.
