No hay una vieja historia detrás de la etiqueta de este premier cru borgoñés. No hay una vieja historia, pero sí hay una historia: la historia de los Harbour, Colleen y Nicholas, de una canadiense y un estadounidense a los que el azar trasladó a Luxemburgo, donde se conocieron como estudiantes universitarios. Tras varios años trabajando en finanzas, en 2012 decidieron perseguir su sueño, se mudaron al pequeño pueblo de Savigny-lès-Beaune, en la borgoñesa Côte-d’Or, y en 2013 ya estaban elaborando la primera añada de sus vinos en la vieja casa-bodega en la que establecieron su residencia y la Maison Harbour.
Maison Harbour Santenay 1er Cru ‘Les Gravières’ 2018 es un monovarietal de Chardonnay de vendimia manual procedente de las cepas de una parcela de 0,29 hectáreas plantadas en 1994 en espaldera sobre suelos calizos y calcáreos cuyos racimos, enteros, se prensan en una tradicional prensa vertical para pasar a fermentar espontáneamente en madera y hacer una posterior crianza de 12 meses sobre lías en barricas de roble francés (cinco, en esta añada) y seis meses más, ya ensamblado, en depósito de acero inoxidable.
Se trata de un vino de color amarillo limón claro con reflejos verdodos en cuya nariz se mezclan los aromas a manzana con los de mantequilla y ligeras notas ahumadas. Encontramos también claros recuerdos a frutas cítricas e, incluso, algún matiz de fruta tropical en un vino que, cuando lo llevamos a la boca, es inconfundiblemente borgoñés, mineral, opulento pero sin ser pesado, levemente salino, vibrante, complejo y persistente.
Y lo más divertido es, quizás, que quien nos invita a degustar esta botella a ciegas es también un vitivinicultor (danés, en nuestro caso) que dejó su trabajo de oficina y abandonó su tierra para comenzar con su familia una nueva vida a miles de kilómetros persiguiendo ese sueño que todos los fanáticos del vino hemos abrazado en alguna ocasión y que solo unos pocos valientes como Colleen y Nicholas se han atrevido a convertir en realidad; ese sueño del que sólo pueden nacer vinos desbordantes de autenticidad.

There’s no old story behind the label of this Burgundian premier cru. There’s no old story, but there is a story: the story of the Harbours, Colleen and Nicholas, of a Canadian and an American who were moved by chance to Luxembourg, where they met as university students. After several years working in finance, in 2012 they decided to pursue their dream, they moved to the small village of Savigny-lès-Beaune, in the Burgundian Côte-d’Or, and in 2013 they were already making the first vintage of their wines in the old house-cellar where they decided to live and make wine.
Maison Harbor Santenay 1er Cru ‘Les Gravières’ 2018 is a hand harvested Chardonnay single-varietal made from the vines of a 0.29-hectare plot planted in 1994 on trellises on limestone and calcareous soils whose whole bunches are pressed in a traditional vertical press to spontaneously ferment in wood and undergo a subsequent aging of 12 months on its lees in French oak barrels (five, in this vintage) and six more months, once assembled, in stainless steel tanks.
It’s a light lemon yellow wine with greenish reflections whose nose mixes apple aromas with those of butter and light smoky notes. We also find clear memories of citrus fruits and, even, some nuance of tropical fruit in a wine that, when we taste it, is unmistakably Burgundy, mineral, opulent but without being heavy, slightly saline, vibrant, complex and persistent.
And the funniest thing is, perhaps, that the person who invites us to taste this bottle blindfolded is also a wine grower (Danish, in our case) who left his office job and left his land to start a new life with his family thousands of kilometers away, chasing that dream that all wine fans have embraced at some point and that only a few brave people like Colleen and Nicholas have dared to make a reality; That dream from which only wines overflowing with authenticity can be born.
