Coteau de Corton es la única ladera en toda Borgoña que produce vinos Grand Cru tanto blancos como tintos; una colina coronada por un frondoso bosque a unos cinco kilómetros al norte de Beaune, ya en la frontera con la Côte de Nuits. Jean-Baptiste Gagnerot creó domaine Gagnerot en un lejano 1802, si bien no es hasta 1864 cuando su única hija se casa con François Capitain, un marchante de vinos con el que nace el Domaine Capitain-Gagnerot. A día de hoy la bodega sigue en manos de sus herederos, y son Pierre-François y Delphine Capitain quienes están al frente de esta bodega familiar cuyo viñedo se encuentra en el mencionado Coteau (cerro) de Corton.
Capitain-Gagnerot Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2018 es un monovarietal de Chardonnay plantado sobre suelos de margas blancas y calizas. Tras una vendimia manual, las uvas son seleccionadas y despalilladas antes de ser sometidas a un prensado ligero que dura unas cuatro horas. El mosto fermenta en barricas de roble francés a unos veinte grados centígrados, y el vino tiene una crianza en barricas de roble francés (10 % nuevas) de entre seis y ocho meses.
En copa se presenta con un bonito color dorado claro con reflejos verdosos. Su nariz es exuberante a la vez que elegante. En ella encontramos fruta de hueso, flores blancas y miel junto a notas ahumadas y minerales; una nariz que muestra a la perfección la uva y el terroir. Su boca es elegante y compleja, con una buena acidez en un trago largo, fino e intenso. Es uno de esos vinos que a cada trago te explica por qué Borgoña es Borgoña, por qué un Grand Cru es un Grand Cru y por qué cada vigneron presume de su climat en la etiqueta de sus vinos.

Capitain-Gagnerot Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2018: A Chardonnay that tells you the greatness of Burgundy with every sip
Coteau de Corton is the only hillside in all of Burgundy that produces both white and red Grand Cru wines; a hill crowned by a lush forest about five kilometers north of Beaune, already on the border with the Côte de Nuits. In that privileged environment where each vigneron boasts of its climat, of its singular bit of Burgundian vineyard, on the label of its wines, little jewels are born that brim with quality, know-how and history like this Capitain-Gagnerot Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2018.
Jean-Baptiste Gagnerot created domaine Gagnerot in a distant 1802, although it was not until 1864 when his only daughter married François Capitain, a wine dealer with whom the Domaine Capitain-Gagnerot was born. Today the winery is still in the hands of his heirs, and it’s Pierre-François and Delphine Capitain who are in charge of this family winery whose vineyard is located on the aforementioned Coteau (hill) of Corton.
Capitain-Gagnerot Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2018 is a Chardonnay single-varietal planted on white loam and limestone soils. After a manual harvest, the grapes are selected and destemmed before being subjected to a light pressing that lasts about four hours. The must ferments in French oak barrels at around twenty degrees Celsius, and the wine is aged in French oak barrels (10% new) for between six and eight months.
In the glass it shows a beautiful light golden color with greenish reflections. Its nose is exuberant as well as elegant. In it we find stone fruit, white flowers and honey along with smoky and mineral notes; a nose that perfectly shows the grape and the terroir. Its palate is elegant and complex, with good acidity in a long, fine and intense sip. It’s one of those wines that with each sip explains to you why Burgundy is Burgundy, why a Grand Cru is a Grand Cru and why each vigneron boasts its climat on the label of its wines.
