Descalificado 2016: A wine that boasts of not being a Ribera del Duero

He was never a simple person, and even less in his last days, when he tried in vain to finish his Requiem. Nor was he the histrionic clown drawn by Amadeus, the film with which Milos Forman popularized the figure of Mozart. So when we saw the ‘R’ of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s own original calligraphy reproduced on the capsule of this challenging wine from Ribera del Duero, the ‘R’ of his Requiem, we understood it as a true declaration of intent.

Réquiem Hispania produces three Tempranillo single-varietal wines: Re Minor (D Minor), Réquiem (Requiem) and Descalificado (Disqualified), three wines that come from a vineyard that is over 80 years old, from a vineyard that is twice the age of the appellation of origin itself.

Descalificado 2016 is a wine from a manual harvest. After passing through the selection table, the grapes were vatted, without the addition of sulphites, in small frustoconical stainless steel tanks with temperature control, where fermentation was carried out with native yeasts. Subsequently, the wine remained for 16 months in new and second-use French oak barrels.

When we serve it, we find a cherry colored wine. Its nose offers us red and black fruit, notes of vanilla, tobacco leaf, liquorice and tapenade. In the palate it requires a bit of time to open up. Freshly served, it’s a rustic wine with a fantastic acidity, with tannins that are present but not annoying, an aniseed touch of and a medium, somewhat edgy sip, which ends with a pleasant aftertaste, one of those wines that invite you to continue drinking. As it stretches out, it’s even friendlier, more amalgamated, without losing that rusticity that characterizes it.

According to what the winery has told us , Descalificado owes its name to the excess of volatile acidity registered in the analysis of the sample collected by the regulatory council, that prevented this wine, acidified by the choice of the degree of maturity of the grape, without additives, was labeled as a Ribera del Duero. Curiously, there is no trace of volatile sensation when we tasted it; just a surprising freshness for a wine whose name is written in the handwriting of Mozart himself, who was never a simple person, and even less so in his last days.
