Ogga Reserva 2015

Have you ever wondered what is the origin of the name «Rioja«? It’s one of those cases in which historians, palaeographers, etymologists and other experts of these things don’t agree, but the theory with the most followers is the one that maintains that Rioja owes its name to the Oja river, whose basin, together with the Tirón river basin, delimited the Rioja region.
Ogga Reserva 2015 is the Ijalba family’s wine tribute to Rioja. Its name is the oldest known spelling of that river Oja, which was most likely named after the fallen leaves of the beech and holm oaks in the surrounding valley that cover its waters in autumn.
As a good tribute, it’s made only in classified vintages as «Excellent» by the designation of origin, from grapes (90% Tempranillo and 10% other varieties) hand picked in the vineyards with the lowest yields of the winery, with an average of 60 years, located in the villages of Gimileo and Haro on sandy and calcareous soils. Once de-stemmed, the grapes are cold macerated for three days and fermented in small stainless steel tanks under strict temperature control and using their own yeasts. During the fermentation and maceration time, manual pump-overs are carried out, and subsequently the wine is aged for no less than 20 months in French oak barrels, in which it will also undergo malolactic conversion and will be bottled without filtering.
As a good reserve, Ogga needs to breathe to express its full potential. When it does, it shows you a promising deep and dark cherry color with a dark pinkish halo that begins to show slightly rusty notes. The nose is intense. There’s a liquor black fruit in one layer along with toasted, roasted, and dried fruits in another. And in the palate everything we’ve seen and we’ve smelled is just confirmed. It has a silky, intense, long, very structured mid palate, with the wood very well integrated. It warms your mouth and it’s difficult to resist filling the glass, which is, without a doubt, the best tribute that a wine can make to a wine region such as Rioja.
