Hay proyectos personales, los hay muy personales, y un paso más allá está Pago de los Abuelos, el proyecto del enólogo Nacho Álvarez Losada en el Bierzo. Como todo lo bueno, se gesta poco a poco y con enorme esfuerzo, en 2015 cuando Nacho empieza a recuperar las viñas de sus abuelos, Floripes y Guillermo, plantadas a partir de 1888. Los siguientes dos años se invierten en conducir las vides con estacas, restaurar bancales, replantar las faltas… y en los años siguientes se añaden viñas plantadas por abuelos de sus amigos.
Los primeros vinos salen al mercado en 2018, y nosotros hemos tenido el privilegio de probar uno de ellos. De los abuelos Godello 2018 es un monovarietal de uvas procedentes de un viñedo de 110 años a 430 metros de altitud con suelo de pizarra. Las uvas fermentan en depósitos de acero inoxidable y tienen una crianza de seis meses sobre sus lías
En nariz encontramos fruta de hueso juntos con notas citrícas, mientras que en boca es un vino fresco, equilibrado y amable. Más allá de eso, es un vino que transmite la historia, y al mismo tiempo habla del futuro, de un futuro gestado poco a poco y con enorme esfuerzo; como todo lo bueno.

Pago de los Abuelos is the winemaker Nacho Álvarez project in El Bierzo. The project started in 2015 when Nacho began to recover the vines of his grandparents, Floripes and Guillermo, planted in 1888. In the following two years the vines were driven with stakes, the terracing was restored and missing strains were replanted. And in the following years vines planted by his friend’s grandparents were added to the project.
The first wines hit the market in 2018, and we have had the privilege of trying one of them. Los abuelos Godello 2018 is a Godello single-varietal from a 430 meter hight 110-year-old vineyard with slate soil. The grapes ferment in stainless steel tanks and are aged for six months on their lees.
On the nose we find stone fruit together with citric notes, while on the palate it’s a fresh, balanced and a friendly wine. Beyond that, it is a wine that transmits history, and at the same time speaks of the future, of a future created little by little and with enormous effort.
