Hay vinos que hablan alto, algunos vinos cantan, y otros hasta gritan; pero pocos, muy pocos, te hablan en voz baja. Carlos, Isa y Tirso habían visto cómo sus padres cultivaban viñas pero nunca vendían vino. Por eso, en 2012 decidieron ser ellos los encargados de cultivar las nueve parcelas de sus padres; seis hectáreas de viña con las que empezar a hacer vinos, sus Vinos en Voz Baja, el nombre con el que decidieron bautizar su proyecto, situado en Aldeanueva de Ebro, en la Rioja Baja, ahora Rioja Oriental.
El Outsider 2020 es un vino diferente, criado en damajuanas de cristal por el mero hecho de que en su primera añada no tenían un recipiente mejor donde meterlo y porque ahora no conciben un recipiente mejor donde criarlo. Este coupage de Garnacha, Tempranillo y Pasera procede de Viña Las Planas, un viñedo plantado en 1980 sobre suelo franco arenoso. Las uvas, vendimiadas a mano, se pisan con raspón en barricas abiertas de 225 litros, donde fermentarán con levaduras autóctonas y sin control de temperatura. La fermentación maloláctica se lleva a cabo en damajuanas de cristal de 54 litros, en las cuales el vino se afinará durante varios meses antes de ser embotellado sin ser filtrado y sin añadírsele sulfitos.
Estamos ante un vino color picota. Su nariz es limpia, con la fruta negra como absoluta protagonista, acompañada de ligeras notas minerales. En boca es goloso, con un tanino marcado pero agradable, muy buena acidez, un ligero resto carbónico y un final con notas de regaliz. Es un vino diferente, que se aleja de las elaboraciones más tradicionales; un gran descubrimiento que hace que queramos saber mucho más de esos vinos que llaman tu atención hablándote “en voz baja”.

There are wines that speak loudly, some wines sing, and others even shout; but few, very few, speak to you in a low voice (or, as we say in Spanish: “en voz baja”, just like the name of the winery: Vinos en voz baja, or “wines in a low voice” in English).
Carlos, Isa, and Tirso had seen their parents grow vineyards but they never sold wine. For this reason, in 2012 they decided to take the lead and start to make wine with six hectares of vineyard from their parents divided in nine plots and created Vinos en Voz Baja, the name with which they decided to baptize their project, located in Aldeanueva de Ebro, in Rioja Oriental.
El Outsider 2020 is a different wine, aged in glass demijohns for the mere fact that in its first vintage they didn’t have a better container, and because now they cannot conceive of a better container to age this wine in. This blend of Grenache, Tempranillo and Pasera comes from Viña Las Planas, a vineyard planted in 1980 on sandy loam soil. The grapes, harvested by hand, are foot trodden in open 225-liter barrels, where they will ferment with indigenous yeasts and without temperature control. The malolactic fermentation takes place in 54-liter glass demijohns, in which the wine will be refined for several months before being bottled without being filtered and without adding sulfites.
This is a cherry-colored wine. Its nose is clean, with black fruit as the absolute protagonist, accompanied by light mineral notes. In the palate it’s sweet, with a marked but pleasant tannin, very good acidity, a slight carbonic residue and a finish with notes of liquorice. It’s a different wine, which is far from the more traditional elaborations; a great discovery that makes us want to know much more about those wines that catch your attention by speaking to you “in a low voice”.
