Cucú Cantaba la Rana 2021: The Barco del Corneta winery’s entry range wine to discover the authentic Verdejo
Sometimes it only takes four words for a melody to play in your head and you immediately go back to your childhood. “Cucú cantaba la rana” (Cucú the frog sung) has that power. We read those four words and immediately another four come to mind: “Cucú debajo del agua” (Cucú under the water), making it impossible to avoid closing our eyes and continuing to hum that nursery rhyme that makes us travel to a past time when wine was one of those boring things that adults like.
Cucú Cantaba la Rana is today the name of a wine that has awakened our memory, a wine made by Barco del Corneta, by one of those few wineries whose name is intrinsically linked to the concept of ‘Authentic Verdejo’.
Cucú Cantaba la Rana 2021 is a Verdejo single-varietal from vineyards planted at an altitude of between 750 and 850 meters in La Seca (Valladolid) on siliceous sand and clay soils, and in Aldeanueva del Codonal (Segovia) on sandy soils. The vineyards are organically farmed and, after the harvest, once in the winery, the grapes are pressed, and their must ferments with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks with temperature control (75%) and in 300-liter French oak barrels (25%). Then the wine is aged on its lees in the same containers where it ferments. Before being bottled, the wine is clarified and subjected to a gentle filtering.
Cucú shows itself in the glass with a color between straw and lemon. On the nose we find stone fruit, flowers and notes of fennel. On the palate it’s an easy wine, fruity, with good intensity and an extraordinary varietal aftertaste we can define as a touch between spicy and bitter. It’s the entry range wine of one of those wineries that you know never fails, where you will find good fruit and authenticity, and in this case, as a tip, a trip to childhood, to a time in the past when wine was a one of those boring things of the adults while in our heads it doesn’t stop ringing: Cucú cantaba la rana, cucú debajo del agua, cucú pasó una señora…
