Vega Vella Graciano 2017

🇬🇧
Tasting this first vintage of Vega Vella Graciano was a really exciting experience. On one hand, it belongs to the line of organic wines from its winery (Cornelio Dinastía), and we love to see how more and more producers choose organic viticulture. On the other hand, we are crazy about the single-varietals of those grapes that have traditionally had a secondary role in the blends of the stellar varieties, that grapes that often offer an overwhelming personality and have many things to tell.

Vega Vella Graciano 2017 was made with grapes from La Pedrera, a vineyard in Rioja Oriental, located on the north bank of the Ebro river, on a stony slope facing south-southwest. It’s a vineyard about 25 years old, organically grown, whose grapes are traditionally used to “round out” the Tempranillo, although this time they were independently vinified, aged for 12 months in French oak barrels and another couple of years in the bottle.
When we uncork that burgundy bottle (which is in itself a declaration of intent), we find a cherry-colored wine with a ruby-violet rim. On the nose, black fruit takes the lead, followed by violets and hints of vanilla and wood. A fantastic acidity commands in the attack in the palate. It’s a fresh wine, with a vertical entry, in which the fruit is always present. This direct attack gives way to a wider palate, with present tannins but not at all annoying and astringent notes on a glyceric body that leaves a persistent tear in the glass.
If you are looking for that balanced, friendly and sweet Rioja, you will not find it in this Vega Vella Graciano 2017, but if you want to savor the terroir and intensity in a lively wine that speaks to you about the grape in every sip, this bottle is an authentic shot of varietal typicity, a real shot of Graciano.
