Rioja le debe mucho a la Garnacha. Esta variedad fue clave para la recuperación de su viñedo tras el episodio de oídio de 1854 y tras la plaga de la filoxera, medio siglo después. La Garnacha llegó a ser la uva más plantada en La Rioja, pero nuestra memoria colectiva es frágil, y hoy el Tempranillo parece haber borrado del recuerdo a la “vid del pobre”, tal y como fuera definida por José Valier a finales del siglo XIX.
Arrinconada de la memoria colectiva pero muy presente en los recuerdos de Borja Eguizábal, la Garnacha demuestra su grandeza en la segunda añada de Pálpito, un vino
sobre el que el CEO de Bodegas Franco-Españolas nos explica que “siempre sentí que debía volver a los orígenes, a los viñedos donde todo comenzó. Este vino es el reflejo de esa emoción, de esa intuición que me llevó a apostar por la Garnacha de Tudelilla, la misma que un día fue testigo de los paseos con mi abuela Camila. Pálpito es, en esencia, un regreso al alma de nuestra bodega”.
Pálpito 2022 es, así, un monovarietal de Garnacha procedente de un viñedo de 1,6 hectáreas ubicado en el paraje de La Pedriza, a 620 metros de altitud, en la localidad riojabajeña de Tudelilla; una viña de suelos franco-arenosos cuyas cepas centenarias apenas alcanzan un rendimiento de 2.850 kilos por hectárea.
La fermentación se llevó a cabo en barricas de 700 litros con bazuqueos manuales a una temperatura media de 22 ºC, mientras que para la maloláctica se trasegó el vino a barricas de roble francés de 500 litros. Posteriormente se llevó a cabo una crianza de 16 meses en barricas de 225 y 500 litros.
Cuando catamos Pálpito 2022 encontramos un vino de color rojo picota y capa media. Su nariz es limpia, sugerente, seria, balsámica, especiada y moderadamente frutal, con aromas a fruta roja, humo, una nota floral y de regaliz. Por su parte, la boca de este Pálpito es impecable, elegante, sin aristas, con una buena acidez, taninos pulidos, buena intensidad y longitud. Es una Garnacha seria y elegante, muy alejada de las garnachas frutales y golosas pero al mismo tiempo rebosante de tipicidad; una gran expresión de esa “vid del pobre” que tanto ha hecho por la viticultura de Rioja.

Pálpito 2022: An excellent wine for aging that highlights the Grenache of Eastern Rioja
Rioja owes much to Grenache. This variety was key to the recovery of its vineyards after the powdery mildew outbreak of 1854 and after the phylloxera plague half a century later. Grenache once became the most widely planted grape in La Rioja, but our collective memory is fragile, and today Tempranillo seems to have erased the “poor man’s vine”, as defined by José Valier at the end of the 19th century.
Almost erased from collective memory but ever-present in Borja Eguizábal’s memories, Grenache demonstrates its greatness in the second vintage of Pálpito, a wine about which the CEO of Bodegas Franco-Españolas explains, “I always felt I should return to my origins, to the vineyards where it all began. This wine is a reflection of that emotion, of that intuition that led me to choose Grenache from Tudelilla, the same one that once witnessed my walks with my grandmother Camila. Pálpito is, in essence, a return to the soul of our winery”.
Pálpito 2022 is, thus, a single-varietal Grenache from a 1.6-hectare (4 acres) vineyard located in the La Pedriza area, at an altitude of 620 meters, in the Rioja Oriental village of Tudelilla. A vineyard planted with sandy loam soils, the century-old vines yield just 2,850 kilos per hectare.
Fermentation took place in 700-liter barrels with manual punch-down at an average temperature of 22°C. For malolactic fermentation, the wine was racked into 500-liter French oak barrels. It was then aged for 16 months in 225 and 500-liter barrels.When we taste Pálpito 2022, we find a cherry-red wine with a medium depth. Its nose is clean, suggestive, serious, balsamic, spicy, and moderately fruity, with aromas of red fruit, smoke, floral notes, and licorice. The palate of this Pálpito is impeccable, elegant, and straightforward, with good acidity, polished tannins, and good intensity and length. It’s a serious and elegant Grenache, a far cry from the fruity and sweet Grenaches, but at the same time brimming with authenticity; a great expression of that “poor man’s vine” that has done so much for Rioja viticulture.
